The Law Enforcement Torch Run® For Special Olympics
Founded in 1981 by Police Chief Richard La Munyon in the USA, as a way to involve local law enforcement personnel in supporting Special Olympics, The Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics has grown to become the largest grassroots fundraising and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics in the world.
The Torch Run® consists of a series of relays run by law enforcement officers who carry the Special Olympics "Flame of Hope" to Opening Ceremonies of local, regional, national or international Special Olympics Games. The Torch Run® is carried out in more than 30 countries around the world. Through various fundraising programs, law enforcement officers around the world raised more than US$20 million (approximately 18,382,000 euro) in 2002 to support Special Olympics programs.
