North West Region Unified Football – Open Tournament
Sunday 7th February 2010 - Unified Football is already a strong and successful sport in the North West Region. This event held at the Ron Tucker Sports Ground in Bolton, was to invite potential new teams along, to join in and experience Unified Football as part of Special Olympics GB.
The event was attended by 58 Athletes and 44 Unified Partners, many of whom are new to Special Olympics. There were 3 divisions, 1, 2 and juniors.
Teams were entered from SO Halton, SO Bolton Lads and Girls, SO Ellesmere Port & Neston, Everton FiTC, Oakwood and Oldham. It is hope that most of these teams will also now sign up to SOGB, to take part in the monthly Unified Football league held in the region.
The day was a great success, despite the cold weather, and allowed all teams and players to walk away having learnt something about Special Olympics GB Unified Football. SO Halton won division 1 and 2, with Everton FiTC winning the junior competition.
SOGB Unified Football Co-ordinator, Jason Cornwell said “Today was the largest and most successful Unified Football event SOGB has had so far. It’s a credit to all the volunteers in the region that have worked on the initiative leading up to today!”
