Special Olympics Ambassador Anna Hemmings and Special Olympics Surrey Chairman Yogan Yoganathan honoured in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for 2010

Anna HemmingsSpecial Olympics Great Britain is especially pleased to congratulate six-time world canoeing champion and Special Olympics Great Britain Ambassador Anna Hemmings, and former Kingston mayor and Special Olympics Surrey Chairman Councillor Yogan Yoganathan for being awarded MBE’s in the 2010 Queen’s New Years Honours List.

Hemmings, 33, who retired earlier this year, made two Olympic appearances but is best known for success over her sport's marathon distances. She was told she would have to retire from elite sport in 2003 after being diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. However, she resumed training just two years later - going on to win a clean sweep of national, European and world titles. Anna has been a Special Olympics Ambassador since 2008 and has been an inspiration for the charity’s learning disabled athletes and kayak teams.

The former mayor of Kingston, Councillor Yogan Yoganathan was also recognised with a MBE for services to Local Government and to Community Relations in North Surrey (Surbiton, Surrey).

Commenting on his Honour, Councillor Yogan Yoganathan MBE said: “I am delighted, honoured and privileged to be nominated and recognised…. This honour recognises all of these organisations who continue to work tirelessly delivering their voluntary services. The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames would not be the same without these organisations and the volunteers that work so hard for them.”

Special Olympics Surrey Director, Sue Frett, served under Yogan as one of his senior charity fund raising committee members during his term as Mayor of Kingston. “Yogan has been one of the driving forces in the setting up of SOS in 2007 and serves as our Chairman. He is very active and loves the work he does with the athletes.”
